Alma Acquisitions Cleanup & Fund Structure Revision

Description: In June 2024, the EOU Library implemented a new simplified fund structure and reporting code structure in Alma. This session will cover the planning and cleanup work we did to get to that point, as well as specifics on how we used Alma exports, Analytics reports, and spreadsheets to accomplish this and document the new configurations.

Licensing Basics
Lindsay Tebeck, Whitman College; Jesse Holden, Orbis Cascade Alliance

Description: Licensing and negotiations are rarely covered in formal library training or education, leaving professionals unprepared. Lindsay will discuss how she started the Alliance’s new Open Negotiation Education for Academic Libraries (ONEAL) discussion group to address this gap, offering an engaging curriculum for all experience levels to explore licensing collaboratively. Discover how ONEAL can benefit you!

Through the work of the E-Content Group over the past several years, the Alliance has developed Licensing Best Practices to help guide conversations about licensing at both the consortial and member levels. Jesse will provide an overview of the Best Practices document and summarize some key elements.

Discussion: the new RDA Toolkit and BIBFRAME

Description: This session will provide an opportunity to share resources and knowledge concerning the new RDA Toolkit.  We’ll also discuss Alma support for the BIBFRAME format, and if/when that might be useful to us.  Finally, we’ll discuss how the Alliance can best support members with both of these major changes to cataloging.

Homosaurus Rex: Unleashing the Power of Community-Driven Alternative Controlled Vocabulary Implementation
Crystal Yragui, University of Washington; Holly Wheeler, Mount Hood Community College

Description: Presenters Holly Wheeler (Mount Hood Community College) and Crystal Yragui (University of Washington) provide an update on the progress of the Homosaurus Implementation Project (HIP) along with lessons learned geared towards seasoned catalogers and those brand new to the exciting world of subject analysis and controlled vocabularies. A brief demonstration of workflows follows. Workflows for adding Homosaurus terms to targeted records, developing and documenting best practices for working with the Homosaurus in libraries, proposing new or revised terms to the Homosaurus vocabulary, and participating in the SACO Gender and Sexuality Funnel Project are covered. A Q&A for current and prospective participants concludes the session.

Indication Rules: An Alma Power Tool for Everyone

Description: Alma’s built-in search indexes are useful, but sometimes the data you need isn’t in one – or it’s cobbled together with data from other fields into a general index.  This session will introduce you to Alma indication rules, which are a simple but powerful way to identify groups of records in Alma based on granular MARC metadata and fixed field codes.

Overview of Open Access

Description: Access is just the beginning….

“Open” is about more than just being able to read or share an article. It’s
about providing the right context to understand it. The resources to replicate it. The tools to collaborate and make science better. Learn how PLOS is experimenting with business models that aim to forge a truly inclusive publishing environment and remove financial barriers to authors and institutions. This presentation will also provide information on our Open Science indicators initiative, a large public dataset identifying and quantifying Open Science practices like preprint posting, data sharing and code sharing in PLOS articles, as well as a selection of comparator articles published elsewhere.

Getting Up and Running with Alma Acquisitions: Tips, Tricks & Lessons Learned

Description: In FY24, OHSU Library began using the Alma Acquisitions module to more intentionally track budgets, subscriptions, and one-time purchases. We had previously only used this module in a very limited capacity, and a lot of old data had to be cleaned up in order to use the system the way we wanted to. This presentation will explore how we approached this cleanup work, the new processes we developed to track and report on this information, and some lessons we learned along the way.

Description: This session will familiarize members with the seven Alliance Metadata Mandates.  These are the “absolute musts” to remember when cataloging in an Alliance institution.  We’ll review each mandate and boil it down to its key takeaways.  A cheat-sheet version of the mandates will also be provided.

Location, Location, Location!: How we turned mis-adventures in creating a Storage Location ID system into a successful inventory project and powerful tool
Rachael Davis and Caroline Reul, Oregon Health & Science University

Description: In this presentation, we take our audience through the process of creating and implementing a Storage Location ID system that was developed at OHSU after a shifting project was completed. We show what it takes to initiate such a project and the complexities/challenges that a global pandemic can have on the workflow. Next, we discuss how the SLIDs were used to inventory the collection and identify different batches of clean-up work both in the stacks and in Alma. We finish the presentation with key takeaways, questions that the project brought up, and next steps that we have envisioned for the future of the project.

Organizing for Open: Aligning organizational structures with open values

Description: Many academic libraries have a strong commitment to open scholarship articulated in strategic planning goals, values statements, and policy documents. This session will describe how Oregon State University Libraries and Press has been engaging in conversations about organizing library services and staffing in these areas to adapt to an increasingly open scholarly publishing landscape.
