Awarded annually, the John F. Helmer Awards promote member development and engagement in support of Alliance strategic initiatives. Applications must focus on a project that is in direct alignment with Alliance Strategic Initiatives and that can be accomplished one calendar year.
For the 2022 calendar year, the Alliance Board of Directors approved funding two proposals:
Zines in Libraries Symposium will fund a two-day virtual symposium that will gather Alliance members and members of the greater library and zine community. The goal of the Zines in Libraries Symposium is to engage the Alliance community with zines, alternative publications and DIY media and to provide tools, resources, and tips on how to successfully integrate zines into libraries and instruction. This symposium will bring together both library staff working with zines, as well as zine makers themselves. The project leaders are Maria Cunningham (OHSU) and Ann Matsushima Chiu (Reed).
Search Advocacy and the Alliance will hold a virtual training of the OSU Search Advocate program for Alliance members. This program aims to “[enhance] equity, validity, and diversity in university hiring” and has been adopted by universities around the region and the nation as a way to mitigate bias in the hiring process. The project leaders are Xan Arch (University of Portland) and Isaac Gilman (Pacific University)
Thanks to this year’s Helmer Awards Committee: Jane Carlin (University of Puget Sound, Chair), John Schoppert (Oregon Institute of Technology) and Jason Kovac (Clackamas Community College).
