Introduction
Communities experience libraries as more than online spaces. This project focuses on ways to support library workers in our efforts to improve the user experience of our physical spaces.
- Design & Aesthetics: Resources for librarians to review aesthetics such as lighting, color, green space, artwork, book displays, and other exhibits to increase student belonging and mental health along with creating culturally responsive and inclusive spaces.
- Furniture & Use of Space: Discusses types and selection of furniture, physical accessibility, and how students and other user groups use academic library spaces. Includes discussion of assessment methods.
- Safety: Addresses both physical and psychological safety (i.e., real security from harm and perception of security) as aspects of library physical spaces.
- Sensory Elements: Focuses on how our sensory experience of an environment can affect cognitive ability, creativity, and focus. The resources on this page can provide information on best practices, guidelines, examples, and current research on sensory elements in the library.
- Signage & Wayfinding: Provides resources regarding signage and wayfinding in libraries. Including journal articles, literature reviews, videos, checklists, guidelines and examples, topics range from signage inventories, signage design, wayfinding techniques, and accessibility.
