Navigator components-NRE detail

This page is under construction  to provide a brief description of the components that make up Navigator.

Navigator Request Engine and Circulation Gateway

primary functions of NRE and Circulation Gateway and interaction with local system

NRE sends an NCIP message to Circulation Gateway (Circ Gateway, or CG) which triggers an action such as place holds or a checkin or checkout, copy request to local system, patron notices, etc.

  • Ship (Lending institution): Once patron submits the request in NRE, NRE sends message to Circ Gateway.
Lending institution may be set up for automated holds. In the local system at owning (lending) institution, CG places an automated hold for the item, on a generic institution patron record.
  • Receive (Borrowing institution): Staff at borrowing site "actions" the item to Received in NRE, then Circ Gateway creates a temporary bib and item records in the local system. Hold on item may be placed (a) manually by library staff, or (b) automatically by system (library choice, requires setup).
Automated holds: The hold goes onto the real patron record.  Pickup location is designated according to RML. Automated checkin: At library request, may be set up also for automated checkin and hold pickup notice on local system. Requirements: "telnet" and  constraints on type of ID; see section on Patron ID Numbers on Patron Authentication page.
  • Return: Staff at borrowing site actions the item to Returned in NRE, then Circ Gateway discharges the item in the local system (if NCIP Check In Item service has been activated for the institution).
  • Checkin: Staff at owning site actions item to Checked In, then Circ Gateway discharges the item in the local system (if NCIP Check In Item service has been activated for the institution).

Circulation Gateway can be set up to communicate with Offline Circ or Automatic Checkin at the local site. When a local site is set up for this capability, only two functions may be enabled, separately: Returned (Borrowing site checkin from patron, returning item to lending site) and Checked in (final checkin at Lending site, item returned from Borrowing site).
